Welcome to Our House!

We have worked tirelessly over the last year to build Our House. Join us to celebrate the opening of the first ever dedicated LGBTQ+ centre in Wakefield!

The Our House Cafe is open all day, serving delicious drinks and refreshments, pop down any time and look around. We also have a jam packed programme of free workshops and events, listed below. Places are limited so please book a ticket to secure a place.

On our Launch day there are some other things to watch out for is you are visiting the space:

  • LGBTQ+ Art Exhibition - we will be displaying artwork from a number of local LGBTQ+ artists and creators on the walls of Our House.

  • Launch of the new Our House Shop & Coffee House - We have been working with a number of Queer owned businesses, including the Bookish Type from leeds, to bring an exciting new Queer emporium of books, gifts and merch to Wakefield!

  • Unveiling our new Accessible Toilet - Funded by the Screwfix Foundation, we are proud to have finally installed our new toilet in the space for wheelchair users and families.

Programme Timetable

10am - 11.15am - Grand Opening Event
Join us as we kick off the day with cutting the ribbon to officially ‘open’ Our House and then enjoy a complimentary continental breakfast. We will hear from some of Our House staff, volunteers and partners about the importance of this dedicated LGBTQ+ space for the Wakefield community.

11.30am - 12.30pm - Volunteering Workshop - Unlocking our collective potential Why not get involved with your new local LGBTQ+ space? Find out more about the volunteering opportunities available at Our House and how you can flexibly volunteer and help shape the direction of our new local LGBTQ+ community centre.

1pm - 2pm - Art Workshop - Make Your Mark!
Join us and make your mark on the Our House Wakefield LGBTQ+ Community Quilt. Your individual patch will be added to our permanent quilt that will be displayed in Our House for years to come. Funded by Wakefield City Council Culture Grant.


2.30pm - 3.30pm - Focus Group - Accessibility for all!
Our House belongs to all LGBTQ+ people; join this group discussion as we explore together what accessibility means for the centre and what else we can do to build an accessible space where as many people can benefit as possible. Facilitated by Christian Buchan and 2bu Wakefield.

4pm - 5pm - Bookish Badge Making
Join Ray and Nic from The Bookish Type who are partnering with Our House to bring their books to the centre through our new shop! Together we will be making cute pins and chatting about queer books and literature. Ray and Nic will bring their badge making machine and lots of queer bookish inspirations to help you make your ownbadges to wear with pride. All materials provided. Facilitated by The Bookish Type

6pm - 9pm - Queer Open Mic “New Beginnings.”
Celebrate the launch of Our House with a free open mic night featuring a headline performance by Maddie Morris, 2019 winner of the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award.

Book your open mic appearance ahead of time for a guaranteed spot, or turn up on the night. If you’re not a musician, come and unwind to the eclectic sounds of an open mic with mocktails and a free buffet.
